Structural Steel Corrosion Control: The Battle Against Coastal Elements (Phase 2)
At the Kenyan coast, the salt air is a silent predator. It doesn’t just rest on surfaces; it eats through steel and concrete, compromising the safety of high-value assets. Phase 2 of the Hass Nyali Series was dedicated to structural steel corrosion control—a high-stakes process of “hacking” back the damage and rebuilding for the future.
The Problem: Why “Fresh Paint” Isn’t Enough
Many contractors make the mistake of painting over rust. In a coastal environment like Nyali, this is a recipe for disaster. The salt remains trapped beneath the paint, continuing to corrode the metal from the inside out.
To ensure long-term integrity, Universal Innovations took a more aggressive approach:
Structural Hacking: We didn’t just sand the surface; we “hacked” back the compromised layers of the canopy and support structures. This reveals the “raw” healthy steel and allows us to assess the true structural health.
Specialized Chemical Treatment: Once the steel was exposed, we applied industrial-grade rust converters and salt-neutralizers. This is the “secret sauce” of professional structural steel corrosion control.
High-Build Protective Coatings: We didn’t use standard gloss. We applied high-build epoxy primers designed to create an airtight, moisture-proof barrier between the steel and the Indian Ocean air.
Challenges: Working in a Live Environment
Corrosion control on a service station canopy is a logistical puzzle. We had to work high above the ground while the station remained partially operational. This required:
Scaffolding Precision: Ensuring our team had stable access to every “nook and cranny” where salt hides.
Dust & Debris Containment: Protecting the pumps and customers’ vehicles from the debris produced during the hacking process.
Safety at Height: As always, our “Zero Incidence” policy was in full effect. Every harness was double-checked, and every permit-to-work was signed before a single tool touched the steel.
The Universal Standard
Led by our technical team, Phase 2 moved with the precision of a surgical operation. By the time we finished the structural repairs, the Hass Nyali canopy wasn’t just “repaired” it was fortified.
What’s Next?
The structure is now safe and sealed. Now, it’s time to make it look like a flagship.
Coming Jan 17: Phase 3 – Mechanical Precision & Industrial Painting. We’ll show you the specialised spray techniques we used to give the station its signature Hass Petroleum shine.
