Rebuilding with Purpose: Mosque & Washroom Renovation at Hass Oil Nanyuki

Client: Hass Oil Kenya
Location: Nanyuki, Kenya
Service Provider: Universal Innovations & Industrial Limited
Project Phase: 3 of 3
Focus: Mosque and Washroom Reconstruction

Project Background

As part of a comprehensive three-phase upgrade at the Hass Oil Nanyuki petrol station, Universal Innovations & Industrial Limited (UIIL) undertook the reconstruction of the site’s mosque and adjoining washrooms. These spaces serve both the public and station staff, making them an essential component of the facility.

Over time, the mosque had deteriorated due to exposure to weather, regular use, and age-related wear. The existing roof was damaged, flooring had lost its finish, and both the interior and exterior required a complete refresh. The washrooms similarly showed signs of structural fatigue and needed urgent attention.

UIIL’s task was to deliver a full structural and cosmetic overhaul that respected the religious nature of the space while ensuring durability and compliance with construction and sanitation standards.

Scope of Work

The mosque and washroom works included:

  • Roof demolition and timber truss reconstruction
  • Floor tiling
  • Ceiling installation
  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Full washroom refurbishment

1. Roof Demolition & Timber Truss Installation

UIIL began by safely demolishing the old, damaged roof, and carefully removing weakened wood and roofing sheets. A new roofing structure was then built using treated timber trusses, engineered for both strength and longevity.

Key steps:

  • Fabricated and installed seasoned timber trusses
  • Assembled framework with proper slope and spacing
  • Treated the wood for moisture and termite resistance
  • Installed heavy-gauge Mabati roofing sheets
  • Ensured adequate ventilation for airflow and cooling

All roofing works followed NCA Kenya’s construction standards for timber structural systems.

2. Floor Tiling

Instead of terrazzo, the team opted for high-quality ceramic tiles for both the mosque interior and washroom floors.

Tiling process:

  • Subfloor preparation and levelling
  • Installation of non-slip, moisture-resistant ceramic tiles
  • Grouting and sealing for a clean, water-resistant finish
  • Gradient adjustments to ensure proper drainage flow

The selected tiles were not only functional for high-traffic areas but also suitable for a worship space that requires barefoot use.

3. Ceiling Installation

A new ceiling system was installed to enhance lighting, insulation, and cleanliness.

  • Metal framing for support

  • Moisture-resistant ceiling boards

  • Paint finishes to prevent mold and mildew

  • Access points for ventilation and lighting fixtures

This ceiling provided better temperature control and created a calm interior ambience for prayer.

4. Interior & Exterior Painting

UIIL repainted the entire structure with long-lasting, washable coatings suitable for both religious and hygienic use.

  • Interior walls: smooth emulsion paints in calm, neutral tones

  • Exterior walls: weatherproof and UV-resistant paints

  • Washrooms: antimicrobial, moisture-proof finishes for hygiene

All surfaces were cleaned and primed beforehand to ensure a smooth, lasting application.

5. Washroom Refurbishment

The adjacent washrooms underwent full restoration:

  • Floor and wall retiled with ceramic tiles

  • Plumbing and sanitary fittings replaced

  • Ventilation improved through windows and exhaust options

  • Wastewater drainage optimized to meet standards

All improvements adhered to the Ministry of Health’s sanitation guidelines and NEMA Kenya’s waste management regulations.

Outcome

The mosque and washrooms were delivered:

  • Structurally sound and newly roofed with treated timber
  • Tiled, ventilated, and freshly painted
  • Compliant with national safety, hygiene, and construction codes
  • Designed for long-term function and spiritual dignity

This was the final milestone in UIIL’s 3-month transformation project at Hass Oil Nanyuki — following the forecourt and carwash upgrades already completed.
