Forecourt Excellence: Universal Innovations at Hass Petroleum Nanyuki
Client: Hass Petroleum Kenya
Location: Nanyuki, Kenya
Service Provider: Universal Innovations & Industrial Limited
Project Duration: 3 Months
Focus: External Works – Forecourt Reconstruction, Fuel Tank Casting & Terrazzo Installation
Project Overview
In the high-stakes world of petroleum infrastructure, safety, durability, and precision are non-negotiable. For this reason, Hass Petroleum Kenya partnered with Universal Innovations & Industrial Limited (UIIL) to upgrade its Nanyuki petrol station over a 3-month period.
This case study highlights the first of three major projects completed simultaneously by UIIL: the external reconstruction of the forecourt. The works included:
Full cabro block replacement
Reinforcement casting for underground fuel tanks
Terrazzo surfacing under the canopy area
These improvements were executed while strictly adhering to regulatory and environmental guidelines set by EPRA Kenya, OSHA Kenya, and NEMA.
Cabro Works: From Demolition to Completion
The existing cabro-paved forecourt had suffered wear and structural instability. UIIL’s mission was to reconstruct the surface fully, ensuring optimal drainage, safety, and fuel-resistance for long-term use.
Step-by-Step Cabro Reconstruction
Step 1
Site Assessment & Safety Setup
- Evaluated slope, surface condition, and drainage challenges
- Installed barricades and warning signage
- Secured fuel systems to prevent accidental interference
Step 2
Removal of Damaged Cabro & Base
- Carefully removed all worn-out cabro blocks
- Excavated compromised base materials to prevent future sinking
- Followed proper waste disposal protocols as per NEMA Kenya
Step 3
Sub-base Preparation
- Laid and compacted hardcore and ballast layers using mechanical rollers
- Ensured proper slope using laser levels for efficient water runoff
Step 4
Bedding Sand Layer
- Spread sharp river sand uniformly over the compacted sub-base
- Screeded for a level, consistent bedding to support new cabro
Step 5
Cabro Block Installation
Laid heavy-duty, interlocking cabro blocks suitable for vehicle loads
Used a herringbone pattern for maximum interlock and weight distribution
Installed concrete edge restraints to prevent lateral movement
Step 6
Vibration & Joint Sealing
- Vibrated surface with a plate compactor to ensure tight interlock
- Swept fine jointing sand into gaps for extra surface stability
Step 7
Final Touches
Cleaned the area, ran quality control checks, and ensured drainage flow
Handover was done following internal Q.A. and client satisfaction
UIIL followed cabro paving best practices outlined by the National Construction Authority of Kenya.

Fuel Tank Casting: Stability Where It Matters
Underground tanks require heavy-duty reinforcement to avoid surface depression or leakage risks.
UIIL:
Demarcated the tank area and prepared the slab framework
Installed steel reinforcement bars and formwork
Poured and cured concrete over the tank area using grade-compliant mixes
The outcome was a solid, spill-resistant foundation designed to last — and to comply with EPRA’s Petroleum Facility Construction Standards.
Terrazzo Surfacing: Under-the-Canopy Finish
Under the fuel dispensing area, UIIL opted for terrazzo surfacing due to its durability and clean finish.
The process involved:
Leveling and prepping the substrate
Applying a terrazzo mix resistant to fuel, oil, and frequent cleaning
Polishing and sealing for a glossy, non-slip finish
This surface provided both aesthetic value and functional safety for high-foot-traffic zones.
Compliance & Safety First
Throughout the project, UIIL maintained full compliance with:
Protocols included:
On-site PPE use
Noise and dust control
Controlled access during work phases
Structured waste disposal
Conclusion
This forecourt transformation stands as a testament to Universal Innovations & Industrial Limited’s capacity to manage complex civil projects with professionalism, safety, and technical expertise.
By completing this project alongside two others within the same timeframe, UIIL demonstrated:
High operational efficiency
Mastery of industrial flooring and fuel station upgrades
Adherence to Kenyan construction regulations
